Network Functions Virtualization – NFV – is rapidly being adopted by communications service providers as they look for different approaches to reduce capital and operational expenses and to accelerate service delivery. NFV allows for network functions to be concentrated in data centers or other central locations, but this practice doesn’t always meet the needs of service providers.
Distributed Network Functions Virtualization (D-NFV) is the first major rollout of NFV to address the needs of small- and medium-sized businesses by providing a “cloud in a box” concept. An alternative approach to NFV, D-NFV advocates the distribution of virtualized network functions (VNFs) throughout the network, placing VNFs wherever they may be most effective and least expensive. Distributed NFV promotes carrier-controlled VNFs that may reside anywhere – in data centers, in network nodes, and at the customer premises. D-NFV can be orchestrated from the carrier/service provider cloud or on premise.
The main virtual network functions (VNFs) to be implemented for any business are the firewall, router, and telephony. IP PBX is one such function that can be virtualized, either hosted or on premise (distributed).
Drawing from our expertise in virtualizing network functions, Northforge developed a telephony VNF (virtual IP PBX) that can run on a low-end Intel X86 platform and still support the functional needs, performance and quality required by a Small-Medium Business (SMB). Northforge Command vIPBX, a virtualized IP PBX function, supports 60 concurrent sessions for a maximum of 300 users.
Northforge’s virtualized Command vIPBX features up to 20 VoIP trunks, a comprehensive call feature set, multi-location networking, and system monitoring. It can run on a C2550 (Atom) at 1.8 GHz, single core, with 1 GB RAM or less, and can, optionally, be deployed with OpenStack.
Northforge Command vIPBX offers an exhaustive set of call, network and management features, including: Auto Attendant, Voicemail, Voice to e-mail, General voice mailboxes, Dial-by-name directory, Speed dial, Music on hold, Call Park, Call Queue, Extension group, Caller ID-based routing, Conference, Call cascade/Follow me, Click-to-dial.
Customers benefit from Command vIPBX’s full functionality, high performance, cost advantages, availability, adaptability, extensibility, and maintainability.
